An Island Life

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday. In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that they take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too.

Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response. If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link below. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!

So my question this week is How many of you will or have sent your kids to PRE-K?? My little girl is four and eligible to go this coming school year.  Hubby is opposed because he says they go to school to long anyway . I think she needs to go to be more prepared for Kindergarden..

  1. We don't have kids but i think that it's important for kids regardless of age to interact with others their age and also to get used with a schedule and some rules... and all without mommy and daddy:)
Happy Friday and here's my Aloha!

  2. We did with our fist and probably will with our 2nd. Our son went to the free Universal Pre-K program in our town and it was free.

  3. My kids did Montessori and I am glad. It gave them a head start with socialization and reading.

    Have a great Friday!

  4. I'm going to send my child to 4 year old preschool next year. He just turned three so he has another year of it. It's sad, but they are almost behind now if they don't go. I think that's kind of unfair to children, but that's how it is. It's no big thing for me b/c my child is in daycare parttime anyway. He's actually already learned a lot, but it's no substitute for being home with mom!

  5. My son goes to kindergarten in a few months. We wont be sending him or my other child to PreK.

I teach them everything I can at home to get them prepared for kindergarten. I'd love for them to be ahead of their class.

They know a bit of Spanish along with it all too.

For socialization with other kids. I take them to the parks, zoos, museums, story time at the library, fun church outings etc and these kids interact with anyone and makes them smile. I love it. So I'm not too worried about this at all.

I hope you and your husband will come to an agreement. I too wanted my kids to attend PreK for the same reason, but my husband said it was not necessary either, however I didn't think he thought about how the kids would learn and be on the same level with their class, so I took it up on myself to ensure that they were taught instead of arguing with him...plus there was the issue of paying for Prek too.

    Aloha!

  6. No kids yet. My sister and I both went to preschool until we went to Kindergarten. My preschool did teach me to read and some basic math :)

  7. I am a teacher and have to tell you, PreK really helps the kids. It is more about socializing and getting used to the daily routines of school. They use a lot of structured play and group/center based activities. My oldest son went to PreK and when he went to kindergarten it was amazing to see the difference with the kids that did not. My youngest will be three in a few weeks. He will be going to nursery school 3 days a week since the following year he will be in PreK. Good luck making your decision.

  10. Your absolutely right! School moves so quickly these days they want children to be more knowledgeable as they enter and graduate from Kindergarten. I had this very talk with a school official today!! My son is 4 and should be entering pre-K in the fall as well. They school is over $900! Way too expensive but we are going to pay it any way. I checked into other area school and they are all about the same. Kids learn a lot more than alphabet and numbers, colors. They learn to interact with other children and so much more. Good luck with your decision. My now 21 yr old and my 9 yr old both went to 2 yrs of preschool my now 4 yr old will only do 1 yr and I'm worried. My 2 yr old will only do 1 yr as well. Its just too expensive for 2 days a week.
